The Story, Durham

Assisted Listening Systems Review Across a Multi-Use Public Building

The Story is a prominent public building incorporating registration offices, ceremony rooms and visitor areas, requiring reliable and accessible communication systems throughout.

As part of the annual inspection programme, we carried out a full review of the assisted listening systems installed across the site, including infra-red assisted listening systems and induction loop installations serving multiple rooms and public-facing areas.

During the inspection, it was identified that while systems were generally operational, improvements were required to ensure consistent performance. In particular, infra-red transmitters were observed entering standby mode and not always reactivating reliably when speech was present.

Additional recommendations were made to improve signage identifying assisted listening facilities and to enhance accessibility provision at key service points such as reception and café areas.

This structured approach enables the client to clearly understand system condition, identify areas requiring attention and maintain reliable accessibility provision across a complex public building environment.
